Mathematics

At Sheering, we are committed to ensuring that all children develop a deep understanding of mathematics, enabling them to reason, problem-solve and make meaningful connections in their learning. Our curriculum is ambitious, engaging and built on the belief that every child can succeed in maths.

A Mastery Approach to Learning

We follow a Maths Mastery approach, ensuring pupils build strong number sense, conceptual understanding and mathematical fluency. Concepts are taught in small steps so children can secure knowledge and confidently apply it in new situations.

White Rose Maths

The White Rose scheme supports the structure of our curriculum, providing clear progression across all year groups. Lessons include fluency, reasoning and problem-solving opportunities that help children think mathematically and articulate their ideas.

Practical, Visual and Abstract Learning

We use manipulatives and visual representations to ensure pupils fully grasp mathematical concepts before moving to more abstract methods. This builds confidence and ensures knowledge is retained over time.

Language and Communication in Maths

Children are encouraged to discuss their thinking, use precise mathematical vocabulary and collaborate on problem-solving tasks. This strengthens understanding and secures key ideas in long-term memory.

Fluency and Recall

Daily practice supports pupils to develop automatic recall of key number facts, including multiplication tables, ensuring they can tackle more complex calculations with ease.

Our aim is for every child at Sheering to view themselves as a mathematician – curious, resilient and ready to face challenges with confidence.
